What makes a great image

I was recently contacted by a couple of young and not so young keen photographers who wanted to further their passion for photography. I was shown many images and this got my creative juices flowing as to what makes a great sports photo. Over the years i have taken thousands of photographs, some of my best images have gone unnoticed, unsold or taken without permission and used on social media (blog 3). With this in my mind i often ask why some images get sold and others in my extensive library of images are possibly never seen again.

“So What Makes a Great Photo?”

Firstly i have been fortunate to have photographed top international sportsman, one of my favorites being Nathan Sharpe of the Australian Wallabies and Western Force. Sharpie was a photographers dream, always in the thick of the action and usually carrying the scars of battle. However one of my favorite recent images was of some slightly less talented but equally committed young sportsman.

On a very untypical wet West Australian day my image of a scrum during a Trinity Vs Christchurch rugby match for me captured the true meaning of sport. Young sportsman representing their colleges for no financial gain and putting their bodies on the line for the love of the sport and teammates. Some of my favorite images are not of international sportsman but those of lesser ability that commit and show passion for the love of what they do.

Thanks to all those involved and i look forward to 2014 season.
